What EXIF Data Contains

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) stores metadata inside image files. A typical smartphone photo contains:

  • GPS Latitude and Longitude — exact coordinates where photo was taken
  • GPS Altitude and timestamp
  • Camera Make and Model (iPhone 16 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S25, etc.)
  • Date and time of capture
  • Aperture (f-number), shutter speed, ISO settings
  • Focal length and lens model
  • Software used for editing
  • Artist / photographer name if set in device settings

GPS coordinates are the highest privacy risk — they can pinpoint your home address, workplace, school, or vacation location to anyone you share photos with.

When EXIF Becomes a Privacy Risk

Safe — EXIF stripped automatically: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X all strip metadata on upload.

High risk — EXIF preserved in original:

  • Email attachments — always preserve original EXIF
  • Telegram 'Send as File' — preserves EXIF
  • Discord — preserves original EXIF
  • Google Drive and Dropbox shares
  • Selling photos online through marketplaces
  • Uploading to smaller websites and forums

How to Remove EXIF in 30 Seconds

Upload your JPEG to the EXIF Viewer & Remover. All metadata displays — GPS coordinates are flagged red as a privacy warning. Click Remove All EXIF & Download.

The removal works by redrawing your image onto an HTML5 Canvas and re-exporting — Canvas export strips all EXIF automatically. The downloaded file is visually identical to the original but contains zero metadata.

Does it reduce image quality? No. EXIF is stored separately from image pixels. Removing it does not affect visual content at all — file size decreases slightly since the metadata is no longer included.

How to View Your EXIF Data Now

Windows: Right-click photo → Properties → Details tab → scroll to see GPS and camera info.

Mac: Open in Preview → Tools → Show Inspector → i tab.

iPhone: Photos app → swipe up on any photo → shows location on a map.

Try checking a photo taken at home — the GPS coordinates will pinpoint your house within a few meters.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is EXIF data and why does it matter for privacy?
EXIF is metadata stored inside photo files containing GPS location, camera model, date/time, and technical settings. It matters because sharing photos with EXIF intact can reveal exactly where and when they were taken — potentially exposing your home address or daily routine to anyone who receives the image file.
Does Instagram strip EXIF data automatically?
Yes — Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X strip EXIF metadata when photos are uploaded. However when sharing photo files directly via email, file transfer apps, or some messaging apps, the original file with all EXIF data is preserved.
How do I remove GPS location from a photo before sharing?
Upload your photo to the EXIF Viewer & Remover, review the GPS coordinates shown in red, then click Remove All EXIF & Download. The downloaded file contains no location data while remaining visually identical.
Does removing EXIF reduce photo quality?
No — EXIF data is stored separately from the image pixels. Removing it leaves the visual content completely unchanged. File size decreases slightly since metadata is removed.
Which messaging apps preserve EXIF when sharing photos?
WhatsApp typically strips EXIF (varies). Telegram preserves it when using 'Send as File'. Discord preserves original EXIF. iMessage strips EXIF. When uncertain, always remove EXIF before sharing photo files containing sensitive location data.
