Converting numbers to words is a practical skill used in check writing, legal documents, contracts, formal writing, and accounting. The rules for writing numbers in English words are consistent, but there are a few conventions โ particularly around large numbers and the use of "and" โ that differ between American and British English and are worth understanding clearly.
Basic Rules: 1 to 99
1โ19: Unique words: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen
20โ90 (tens): twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety
21โ99 (compound): Combine tens and units with a hyphen:
- 21 = twenty-one
- 45 = forty-five
- 78 = seventy-eight
- 99 = ninety-nine
Note: "forty" has no 'u' โ a common misspelling is "fourty" (incorrect).
Hundreds
Number + "hundred" + remainder:
- 100 = one hundred
- 200 = two hundred
- 345 = three hundred forty-five (US) or three hundred and forty-five (UK)
- 900 = nine hundred
The word "and" after "hundred" is standard in British English and optional in American English. In formal legal or financial writing, omitting "and" is more common in the US.
Thousands and Beyond
| Number |
In Words |
| 1,000 | one thousand |
| 5,280 | five thousand two hundred eighty |
| 10,000 | ten thousand |
| 100,000 | one hundred thousand |
| 1,000,000 | one million |
| 1,000,000,000 | one billion (US) / one thousand million (UK traditional) |
| 1,000,000,000,000 | one trillion |
Complex Thousands Example
2,847,362:
- 2,000,000 = two million
- 847,000 = eight hundred forty-seven thousand
- 362 = three hundred sixty-two
- Full: two million eight hundred forty-seven thousand three hundred sixty-two
Writing Dollar Amounts in Words (Check Writing)
Check writing requires the dollar amount spelled out in full, with cents expressed as a fraction of 100:
- $45.75 โ Forty-five and 75/100 dollars
- $1,250.00 โ One thousand two hundred fifty and 00/100 dollars
- $8,900.43 โ Eight thousand nine hundred and 43/100 dollars
The fractional cents format (75/100) is the standard for banking. Some styles write "and no/100" for whole dollar amounts.
Decimals in Words
Read the number before the decimal point as usual, say "point" or "and," then read each digit after the decimal individually:
- 3.14 โ three point one four (or "three and fourteen hundredths" in formal usage)
- 0.75 โ zero point seven five (or "seventy-five hundredths")
- 12.005 โ twelve point zero zero five
Large Number Names
| Name |
Value (US) |
Zeros |
| Million | 1,000,000 | 6 |
| Billion | 1,000,000,000 | 9 |
| Trillion | 1,000,000,000,000 | 12 |
| Quadrillion | 1,000,000,000,000,000 | 15 |
| Quintillion | 10^18 | 18 |
Important: In the US short scale, "billion" = 10โน. In the traditional British long scale (less common now), "billion" = 10ยนยฒ (what Americans call a trillion). Most English-language media worldwide now uses the US short scale.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I write 1,250 in words?▼
One thousand two hundred fifty. The pattern: thousands first, then hundreds, then the two-digit number. For 1,250: "one thousand" + "two hundred" + "fifty." In British English, you might add "and" before the final part: "one thousand two hundred and fifty."
How do I write a dollar amount in words for a check?▼
Write the dollar amount as words, followed by "and" and the cents as a fraction over 100. $1,547.83 becomes: "One thousand five hundred forty-seven and 83/100 dollars." For whole amounts: $500.00 = "Five hundred and 00/100 dollars." Always write out the full amount to prevent alteration.
What is the difference between billion in the US and UK?▼
In the US (short scale): 1 billion = 1,000,000,000 (10โน). In the traditional British long scale: 1 billion = 1,000,000,000,000 (10ยนยฒ). The UK has largely adopted the US short scale in media and finance, but the difference still causes confusion in historical texts and some formal contexts. When precision matters, write the full number or use scientific notation.
How do you write decimals in words?▼
Read the whole number, say "point," then each decimal digit individually: 3.14 = "three point one four." For formal financial writing: 0.75 = "seventy-five hundredths," 0.025 = "twenty-five thousandths." The number of decimal places determines the denominator: tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths.
Is it "forty" or "fourty"?▼
"Forty" โ no 'u'. Despite being derived from "four," the tens form drops the 'u': four โ forty (not fourty). This is one of the most common spelling errors in number words. Similarly: nine โ ninety (not ninety has different vowel), five โ fifty (not fivety).
