🤔 How Does This Tool Work?

Our Data Size Converter uses binary (base-2) conversion factors, as used by operating systems:

  • 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 bytes = 2¹° bytes
  • 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes
  • 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 MB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
  • 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 GB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes
  • 1 Petabyte (PB) = 1,024 TB

To convert: all values are first converted to bytes, then converted to the desired output unit. The result shows the converted value and displays it in human-readable format.

❓ FAQ
How many MB is 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,024 MB (when using binary, as computers do). So a 5 GB file = 5,120 MB. Hard drive manufacturers sometimes use 1,000 MB = 1 GB to make drives appear larger.
Why does my new 1 TB hard drive show less than 1 TB?
Hard drive manufacturers use 1,000 bytes = 1 KB (decimal), while your computer uses 1,024 bytes = 1 KB (binary). This is why a '1 TB' drive shows about 931 GB on your computer. It is the same drive — just different counting methods!
What is the difference between MB and Mb?
MB (uppercase B) = Megabytes, used for file sizes and storage. Mb (lowercase b) = Megabits, used for internet speed. Since 1 byte = 8 bits: 1 MB = 8 Mb. Internet providers use Mb because the number looks bigger!
How many photos can fit in 1 GB?
A typical smartphone photo is 3-5 MB. So 1 GB ÷ 4 MB = approximately 250 photos. A 128 GB phone could theoretically store about 32,000 photos (though the OS and apps use some storage too).
What is a petabyte?
1 Petabyte = 1,024 Terabytes = over 1 million Gigabytes. To put it in perspective: 1 petabyte could store about 250,000 hours of HD video, or approximately 20 million filing cabinet drawers worth of text.
