🤔 How Does This Tool Work?

The Savings Calculator uses compound interest mathematics to show how your savings grow over time:

Formula: Total = Initial × (1 + r)ⁿ + Monthly × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r

Where:

  • r = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
  • n = total months (years × 12)

The calculator shows your total savings, how much you personally contributed (initial + monthly deposits), and how much came from interest — so you can see the amazing power of compound growth!

❓ FAQ
How much should I save every month?
Financial experts generally recommend saving at least 20% of your income. But any amount is better than nothing — the habit of saving matters more than the amount when you first start.
Does it matter if I start saving later?
Enormously! Compound interest means that starting even 5 years earlier can result in tens of thousands more in your final savings. The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow.
What interest rate should I use for my calculation?
Use the actual interest rate your savings account or fixed deposit pays. In Sri Lanka, fixed deposit rates have ranged from 8% to 15% in recent years. Check with your bank for current rates.
Can I use this for investment calculations?
Yes! You can use it to estimate investment growth, but remember that investments (unlike savings accounts) can go up AND down. This calculator shows steady growth — actual investment returns vary.
What if I can only save a small amount each month?
Even small amounts add up dramatically over time thanks to compound interest. Use our calculator to see — you might be surprised how much even 1,000 rupees per month grows over 10 or 20 years!
