⚡ Quick Answer
A fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides fractions. Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. To add fractions, find a common denominator. To multiply fractions, multiply numerators together and denominators together: 2/3 x 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. Our calculator shows all steps and simplifies the result automatically.

🤔 How Does This Work?

Our Fraction Calculator performs all four operations using standard fraction arithmetic:

  • Addition/Subtraction: Find LCD (Lowest Common Denominator) using LCM of denominators. Convert fractions. Add/subtract numerators. Simplify using GCD.
  • Multiplication: Multiply numerators together and denominators together. Simplify using GCD.
  • Division: Flip the second fraction (reciprocal), then multiply. Simplify using GCD.

All results are automatically simplified to their lowest terms. The decimal equivalent is also shown so you can visualise the fraction's value.

✅ Trusted Tool
The 365tool.net Fraction Calculator uses standard arithmetic algorithms including GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) for simplification and LCM (Lowest Common Multiple) for finding common denominators. Free for students, teachers, and parents worldwide. No sign-up needed.
❓ FAQ
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD). Convert both fractions to have that denominator. Then add the numerators. Example: 1/4 + 1/6. LCD = 12. So 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12. Our calculator does all of this automatically!
How do you simplify a fraction?
Divide both the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). Example: 6/8. GCD of 6 and 8 = 2. So 6/8 = 3/4. Our calculator always shows the simplified (lowest term) result.
How do you multiply fractions?
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. Example: 2/3 x 3/4 = (2x3)/(3x4) = 6/12 = 1/2. Much simpler than addition! You do not need a common denominator for multiplication.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal) and then multiply. Example: 2/3 divided by 4/5 = 2/3 x 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6. Remember: Keep, Change, Flip (keep first fraction, change to multiplication, flip second fraction).
What is a mixed number and how do I convert it?
A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction part, like 2 and 1/2. To convert to an improper fraction: multiply whole number by denominator, add numerator, keep same denominator. 2 and 1/2 = (2x2+1)/2 = 5/2. Enter 5 as numerator and 2 as denominator in our calculator.
